Let's face it...
everybody has different taste buds and different preferences for BBQ sauce. Some people don't like BBQ sauce, some people like just a little during the cooking process, some people like to slather the meat down in BBQ sauce.
At the end of the day it's all about what each individual person prefers. However, if you are grilling this summer, I highly recommend using bbq sauce during the cooking process. It really enhances the flavor profile and the taste of the meat. Most people who say they don't like BBQ sauce will not even notice that you used sauce during the cooking process. The trick is to lightly baste the meat in the last 15 mins of the cooking process. The sauce will set, meaning firm up, and enhance the color of your meat and make it more desirable.
If you are still using Kraft BBQ sauce or Sweet Baby Ray's, it's time to step your game up. My rule of thumb when trying new sauces is....if it don't come in a glass bottle, I ain't buying it.
